Readjustment Counseling Services
VA provides readjustment counseling services through 302 community-based Vet Centers located in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Counseling is designed to help combat veterans readjust to civilian life.
Congress established the Vet Center Program in 1979 out of recognition that a significant number of veterans were still experiencing readjustment problems. Vet Centers are community based and part of the Department of Veterans Affairs. In April 1991, in response to the Persian Gulf War, Congress extended the eligibility to veterans who served during other periods of armed hostilities. Those other periods of armed hostilities are identified as World War II, Korea, Lebanon, Grenada, Panama, the Persian Gulf, Somalia, Iraq and the Global War On Terrorism (GWOT). The goal of the Vet Center program is to provide a broad range of counseling, outreach and referral services FREE of charge to eligible veterans in order to help them make a satisfying post-war readjustment to civilian life. In addition, Public Law 103-452 authorizes sexual trauma counseling for veterans who have experienced acts of sexual violence or harassment while on active duty.
