The Department of Veterans Affairs has announced those victims exposed to Camp Lejeune water will receive
disability benefits.
The VA will
begin the process of granting “presumptive disability” status to veterans who have certain cancers and conditions
from long term exposure to the chemicals that contaminated the base water system from August 1, 1953 – December 31,
1987. The VA is conceding that it will no longer deny benefits to eligible veterans based on VA’s faulty and selective
interpretations of science. The VA’s use of “presumptive status” means the benefit of the doubt goes
to the veteran as long as VA determines they meet eligibility requirements. For more information, Veterans and family members should contact the nearest
VA healthcare facility by calling 1–877–222–VETS (8387).
Camp
Lejeune Report
The
CDC’s Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) issued a 70-page report to the VA that causally linked
at least six cancers to toxic exposures at Camp Lejeune. Subsequently, the VA announced it will extend “presumptive”
benefits for these cancers, freeing the patient of having to prove the connection.
