How to Win a VA Claim

Veterans preference for employment. War veterans have preference in employment with government agencies or offices, as well as widows and children of active duty or deceased veterans.

No-Cost or reduced cost Medical Records from any VA hospital or clinic and civilian hospital.

Paid emergency room visit to another hospital. See your VA hospital representative for details.

Annual Clothing Allowance for disabled vets with rigid appliances or qualifying creams. This is one of the VAs best kept secret. They don’t advertise it and the reps themselves don’t know the details. Everyone just points to a government handbook on the subject. I just found out about it and I have started my uphill battle for it. The rules and law on this is so vague, it took me years to research and a lot of trial and error, but I finally figured it out. This is also on appeal with the VA.

Veterans get free glasses, prosthetic appliances and medical equipment with a prescription from a VA doctor and free or reduced drug prescriptions.

Veterans can file a certified copy of their DD214 at your local courthouse and get free copies.

Military and Veteran discounts. See: http://www.military.com/discounts/

Don’t forget the Senior Citizen Discounts, some starting at age 55. Check your local businesses for senior citizen day that offers a discount.  I always ask if they have either a senior citizen or veteran discount in stores and restaurants. It doesn’t hurt and it can save you money. I know that Krogers offers 10% Senior Citizen discount on Kroger brand products. You must be 60 years old and get a Krogers card. You can get a Krogers card online at www.krogers.com . They now have Organic products. Yeah.

You will need a certified copy of your DD214 for most of these benefits. Go to this website and order yours: http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/index.html. You will need an Honorable Discharge, which includes General, Under Honorable Conditions for most of these benefits. If you do not have either of these and would like to apply to upgrade your discharge, you can do it online thru your military branch review board. For the Army, that would be at: http://arba.army.pentagon.mil/.

If you were medically discharged from service, you can also have your disability reviewed by a Disability Review Board. http://arba.army.pentagon.mil/Disability-Appeals.cfm. For a great website on VA disability and benefit news visit: http://www.veteranprograms.com/index.html
