Aid & Attendance In Jeopardy for Many Veterans
New Aid & Attendance regulations propose penalizing veterans for gifts they might have given to their
children for birthdays, holidays or even as payment for providing care. Penalties for this type of gifting can deny veterans
vital assistance through the Aid & Attendance program for up to ten years. The new regulations also add restrictions to
the type of assistance that will be allowed for qualification for Aid & Attendance. Veterans that are at the earliest
stage of medical need and live in independent living facilities will no longer qualify for Aid & Attendance.
Also, surviving spouses and veterans will be limited in the amount they can pay for home care to a national
"average," This does not take into account the regional variables that effect costs. This impedes veterans from
receiving the highest levels of care.
The public comment period is currently
open until March 24, 2015. If you feel these proposed rules are unfair you can go to www.regulations.gov and type in the search "AO73" where you can click on the box "Comment Now"
and make your opinion known.
VA Provides Free Medallions
The Department of Veterans Affairs provides a medallion, by request, to be affixed to an existing, privately-purchased
headstone or marker to signify the deceased's status as a Veteran. This device is furnished in lieu of a traditional Government
headstone or grave marker for those Veterans whose death occurred on or after November 1, 1990, and whose grave in a private
cemetery is marked with a privately purchased headstone or marker. Once a claim for a medallion is received and approved,
VA will mail the medallion along with a kit that will allow the family or the staff of a private cemetery to affix the device
to a headstone, grave marker, mausoleum or columbarium niche cover. This benefit is only applicable if the grave is marked
with a privately purchased headstone or marker.
Veterans Do Not Pay Out-of-State Tuition
Thanks
to a new bill veterans won't have to worry about paying out-of-state tuition at any public university. Provisions in the Veterans' Access to Care through Choice, Accountability, and Transparency
Act of 2014 will require all public universities
to offer in-state tuition to veterans making use of their GI Bill.
Army Apologizes
The undersecretary of the Army apologized for the military's treatment of servicemembers
exposed to chemical weapons in Iraq, and he announced new steps to provide medical support to those with lingering health
effects and to finally recognize veterans who had been denied awards.
In
The Works
Nevada Senator Harry
Reid introduced an amendment to the Senate budget that takes a step forward in keeping our nation’s promises to our
service men and women to provide the full retirement benefits and disability compensation that veterans have earned through
their service.
Senator Reid Said, “No
veteran should have to choose between retirement pay and medical care and it remains unconscionable that veterans who have
sacrificed for the sake of our country are being denied full retirement and disability pay.”
“The amendment
I introduced today will help right this historical wrong, and I urge my colleagues to join me in legalizing full concurrent
receipt for the benefit of the brave men and women who have served this country in uniform.”
