Happy With VA

The VA people serving me have been professional and competent. At first I used the main hospital in Portland, but now my primary physician is at the West Linn Clinic.  I have been in the VA system for over twenty years, using it with my private insurance and Medicare. I have been very happy with the "co-treatment". The VA has helped with general physicals, routine shots, ED treatment, prescriptions and, most recently, hearing aids.  My level of participation means I pay for prescriptions and office visits, but I've received free devices, i.e., blood pressure cuff, hearing aids (and batteries), ED aid.  Register me as a gratefully satisfied user.

Little Help in Increasing My Disability Rating

I've lived with bad knees, back, shoulder and elbow over 14 years now and the Government won't increase my rating from 10%.  5% for each knee and 0% for all the others.  Contacted a Veterans assistance office on the matter and got no where.  So clueless as to how to fix this.  Nothing straight forward, so I just contend with my service related injuries, trying my best to make ends meet.  So long as I can provide for my daughter, I can't really complain, but to do so means living in a truck for a year only save enough money to get the lowest priced Apartment possible that has all types of issues.  I was better off in the truck.  Still I’m able to make sure my daughters has everything she needs. And that’s my very real Story.

VA Benefit Experience

Early after retiring from the USN, my wife and I used the VA Home Loan financing program on two occasions [due to employment transfers].  Worked beautifully.  Once into the civilian workforce, good fortune made it possible to get along without further governmental assistance so I have not applied for any further benefits since those initial experiences.  I am very concerned however for the Vets who are entitled to healthcare, medication, dental, and other benefits they have both earned and deserve according to agreements they entered into with our government upon their entering the service of our nation.  Congress and the president really need to step up and assist the VA staff and its administrators in a manner that will expedite delivery. With gratitude for my fellow Veterans' service and best wishes for their well-being.

Agent Orange

I have been unsuccessful in obtaining compensation for medical conditions I believe are the result of exposure to Agent Orange (AO).  I served two tours in Vietnam (1967-68 and 1968-69) aboard the USS Hassayampa AO-145, a supply oiler.  During my duties I would sometime become covered in AO when the barrels would break open, or leak.  I have survived bladder cancer, an Ischemic heart condition (full blown heart attack on 09-11-2013) and erectile dysfunction. I have been denied benefits/compensation for all conditions twice. Granted, I did not have "boots on ground", but when it comes to exposure to AO, I've been covered.  I'd like to see the VA take claims case by case.  If they did, I think I'd qualify.
