Question #55

I wanted to thank everyone who is involved with this website.  This is an incredible website.  I have a question.  My husband is a Marine veteran and served during the Vietnam War, etc.  He has been looking for 4 other veterans that he served with and has not been successful. I also posted the information on "Vets Looking for Vets."  His health has not been optimal and I am asking for your assistance.  This question is not meant to offend, but is there a resource that I could possibly pay for that might be able to assist him in locating the veterans who he wants to reconnect with?

A1:  One of the best ways is to go to the Unit Website.  Most units have Associations such as the 2nd Battalion 4th Marine Regiments (The Magnificent Bastards).  They have an Association and have an annual meeting.  Also if he has a roster with the veteran's names and service numbers he can write individual letters to the guys he remembers and send to the VA with a stamped envelop.  If the veteran is alive and receiving benefits the VA should forward the letter to the veteran.  By the way the letter should be in the envelope and the envelope should not be sealed. The VA will read the letter to make sure that it is not threatening.  There are a lot of resources out there that are free so I would not pay anyone because a lot of the sites are scams.  (CP)  5/5/2016

A2:   The information that was given is good and if you can find out when or where they have a reunion for his unit then they can help you get in contact for others that served.  They have records saved for each of the branches of service and by writing to them they may be able to direct you to be able to find others that could be looking as well.  I went to the US Navy for Hull numbers, ships crews and led to other websites as well that could put my email address so they could contact me as well as emails I could contact them.  That was a start and now have about 30 or more mostly from the first two ships I served on.  So try out VetFriends.org and that may help as a start has the different branches and then can search in the years served as well.  Best of Luck and hope he can contact buddies to relive friendships from the past.  (JRM)  5/24/2016

Question #56

I was recently back paid through 2010-2014. But did not receive back pay for 10 months of 2015. I was paid at new rate for only November and December of 2015. What about the other 10 months of 2015?  When will I receive back pay for those months?

A1:  I don't know what the situation is as the questions is a little unclear.  The back pay may have been there but the letter transmitting the information may have been confusing.  What I would do is go to the VA Benefits facility nearest to me and see the Benefits Counselor.  I would ask them to go to the pay screens and see what occurred.  Usually a VA Medical Center or larger medical facility has a Benefits Counselor in house.  If there is one they can help you find out what's going on.  If you don't have one close to you I would then request an audit of the payments.  (CP)  5/5/2016
